Section C — Coach Sleep — Why You Sleep
This section covers Chapter 1, Lessons 1.1 through 1.4.
Part A — Vocabulary (20 points, 2 points each)
Select the best answer for each question.
1. Sleep is best described as:
A) The same thing as being unconscious or in a coma B) An active, reversible state of the brain that runs specific maintenance and processing tasks C) Just turning the body "off" D) A type of meditation
2. Wakefulness is:
A) Sleeping with your eyes open B) The state of being awake — aware, responsive, and able to act C) The same as being dizzy D) A type of dream
3. A brain wave is:
A) A wave you make with your hand B) The electrical pattern produced when many neurons fire together — it changes shape during different states like awake, drowsy, or asleep C) A type of haircut D) An ocean wave
4. An EEG is:
A) A type of food B) A device that measures brain waves through electrodes placed on the scalp C) A piece of bedroom furniture D) A vitamin
5. REM sleep is:
A) The deepest, dreamless stage of sleep B) A stage of sleep when the eyes move rapidly under the lids and most vivid dreams happen C) When you cannot fall asleep D) The first hour after dinner
6. Deep sleep is:
A) Sleep where your brain is shut off completely B) A stage of sleep with slow, large brain waves, important for body repair and growth C) Sleep with the lights on D) The same as napping
7. A sleep cycle is:
A) A bicycle for sleep B) The pattern of going through the sleep stages — typically about 90 minutes per cycle in humans C) A type of dream D) The same as a heartbeat
8. Memory consolidation is:
A) Forgetting things on purpose B) The process by which the brain takes new experiences and shifts them into longer-term memory — much of this happens during sleep C) A type of test D) Daydreaming
9. Sleep debt is:
A) Money you owe a doctor B) The amount of sleep your body still needs after several nights of not getting enough C) A type of dream D) A sleep tracker app
10. Circadian rhythm is:
A) A music style B) The roughly 24-hour internal clock that runs your body's daily cycles C) A type of vitamin D) Only present in adults
Part B — Concept Comprehension (20 points, 2 points each)
Select the best answer for each question.
11. Coach Sleep teaches that most middle schoolers (ages 11-12) need:
A) About 4 hours of sleep B) About 9 to 11 hours of sleep C) About 14 hours of sleep D) Exactly 12 hours of sleep
12. A typical sleep cycle in humans lasts about:
A) 10 minutes B) 30 minutes C) 90 minutes D) 4 hours
13. Sleep is not just turning the brain off because:
A) The brain shows no activity during sleep B) The brain runs specific patterns and maintenance jobs while you sleep that it cannot do while awake C) Sleeping wastes brain energy D) Only animals truly sleep
14. Every animal on Earth sleeps in some form, which suggests:
A) Sleep is optional B) Sleep serves a deep biological purpose — no species has evolved to live without it C) Animals are lazy D) Only mammals need sleep
15. A dolphin sleeps:
A) For 16 hours straight every night B) With half its brain at a time so the other half can keep it swimming and breathing C) Only on land D) Never
16. REM stands for:
A) Rapid Eye Movement B) Really Excellent Memory C) Resting Energy Metabolism D) Random Electrical Movement
17. Most of your deep sleep happens:
A) Right before you wake up in the morning B) In the first half of the night C) Only during naps D) Only on weekends
18. Most of your vivid dreaming happens:
A) In the first 30 minutes of sleep B) In REM stages, more common in the second half of the night C) Only during the day D) Only after eating spicy food
19. If a middle schooler chronically gets 6 hours of sleep when their body needs 10, the result is:
A) No effect — bodies adjust B) Sleep debt that affects memory, attention, mood, growth, and immune function C) Faster growth D) Sharper test scores
20. Coach Sleep's main message is:
A) Sleep is a waste of time B) Sleep is one of the oldest, most universal, most carefully protected behaviors in biology, and you need it the way you need food and water C) Only adults need full sleep D) Sleep makes you weak
Part C — Application (30 points, 6 points each)
Write 2-3 complete sentences for each question.
21. A typical middle schooler needs about 10 hours of sleep, and sleep happens in roughly 90-minute cycles. About how many full cycles is that per night? Show your math.
22. A friend says, "I only need 5 hours of sleep — I feel fine." Based on what Lesson 1.3 taught about every animal sleeping and sleep being a deep biological need, explain why this claim is probably wrong (even if they feel fine).
23. Describe one task your brain does during sleep that it cannot do as well while you are awake. Use Lesson 1.1 or 1.3 in your answer.
24. If a student wakes up tired and unfocused, and they have been going to bed at midnight and waking at 6:30 a.m. for a week, how much sleep are they getting per night? Is this enough for a middle schooler? Use math in your answer.
25. Coach Sleep says that no animal has ever figured out how to live without sleep. What does this tell us about whether sleep is "optional" or a "biological need"? Use one example from the chapter (cats, bats, dolphins, etc.) in your answer.
